Activists in Lindsay Heights work to improve neighborhood's environment, reputation

Christal West knows Lindsay Heights has a bad reputation. A lot of people would feel unsafe walking down the street.

“But people here know me,” she said.

Lindsay Heights is between Amani on the west and Downtown Milwaukee on the east.

Accompanied by her husband, Jarvis West, she spends much of her time volunteering with various organizations. She helps families get back-to-school supplies, supports tobacco prevention initiatives, lends a hand to neighborhood clean-up efforts.

West is one of several environmental stewards working to improve the predominantly Black neighborhood, which has faced decades of neglect.
